Why London Shoots Come With Extra Logistics

Film catering anywhere requires planning. London adds a few layers on top of that.

Getting a catering vehicle to your location is not always straightforward. Congestion Charge zones, ULEZ restrictions, permit requirements and narrow side streets all factor into how and when your catering can arrive. A company that has only worked on studio lots or rural locations will not always anticipate those constraints.

Early morning call times are the norm on London shoots. That means your caterer needs to be up and moving at hours most businesses do not operate. The food also has to be ready when the crew needs it, which often means working around noise restrictions, tight turnaround times between set-ups and unpredictable schedule changes.

Parking is another thing entirely. On a central London location, getting a full catering unit close enough to the crew without blocking traffic or breaking permit conditions takes experience.

What Types of London Productions We Cater For

London productions vary enormously in scale and format. We work across:

  • Feature films shooting across central and outer London locations
  • TV dramas, both studio-based and fully on location
  • Commercial shoots for advertising campaigns
  • Music videos
  • Corporate productions and live events

Each format has different rhythms. A feature film might need us feeding 80 to 100 people across split shifts, with different dietary requirements and a director who wants craft services running all day. A commercial shoot might be 20 people over 12 hours with very specific timing around the shoot schedule.

The size of the crew, the length of the shoot, the location and whether there is access to power all shape how catering is set up.

How On-Set Catering Actually Works

Film catering in London is not just about turning up with sandwiches. A proper catering setup involves a full mobile kitchen, which means food is prepared fresh on site rather than delivered pre-packed.

Crew meals are typically served in two main windows: breakfast at the start of the day, and a hot meal mid-shoot. Craft services, snacks, drinks and light refreshments run alongside those main service points. For longer shoots or overnight work, additional meals are scheduled in.

We provide:

  • Full hot catering with multiple menu options
  • Dietary requirements covered as standard (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free)
  • Craft services and snack stations
  • Hotbox catering for locations where a full kitchen vehicle cannot access

The hotbox option is particularly useful for central London shoots where parking is limited. Food is prepared off-site and transported hot to the location.

What to Look For in a Film Catering Company for London

A few things are worth checking before committing to a caterer for a London shoot.

Experience with city locations. Studio work and location work are not the same thing. Ask whether the company has operated in central London before and what their process is for dealing with access restrictions.

Flexibility on the day. Shoots run late. Schedules shift. Your caterer needs to adapt without it becoming a problem. The best crews will have contingencies built in already.

Food quality. This sounds obvious, but it matters more than most production managers expect. Hungry crew is slower crew. A good meal mid-shoot has a measurable effect on energy and morale. Do not cut corners here.

BAFTA ALBERT certification. If your production is working to sustainability targets, check whether your caterer is BAFTA ALBERT certified. We are, and we take it seriously.
